25/01/07 - Moyers
tests for Filsell at Rockingham.
Michael Moyers enjoyed the feeling of being back in a Formula BMW as
he tested with Filsell at
Rockingham.
Silverstone-based Moyers, who raced for the team at Croft last season,
didn’t take long to find
his feet after an icy track forced long delays before the first session
of the day got underway.
With the ice cleared, Moyers started sensibly, feeling his way back
into the car and learning
the Northamptonshire circuit. However, it wasn’t long before
Moyers was consistently knocking
off a second a lap from his times to put himself on a par with the
fastest pedallers on display.
Given that many of his rivals had been testing throughout the winter
and this was his first
opportunity to get back behind the wheel, it made Michael’s smooth
display and rapid progress
all the more impressive.
Unfortunately, midway through the afternoon a young rookie, unable
to handle the power of his
Formula Renault barrelled into Michael at turn one, causing severe
damage to his sidepod. A bit
of gaffer tape later and he was back out, but the frequent stoppages
and the format of the
reduced test made it difficult to get the warmth into the tyres that
would have enabled Moyers
to post a time that would have really turned heads. Moyers said afterwards “it
felt great to be
back behind the wheel and in many ways it was like I hadn’t been
away. It didn’t take long for
me to really feel the car and that gave me the confidence to really
push on and record some great
lap times. Unfortunately, the incident set me back in terms of both
tyre warmth and momentum, but
these things happen in racing and I now can’t wait for the next
test”.
