08/09/08 - Moyers tests
SEAT Cupra at Silverstone
Michael Moyers made his
first appearance in a sports car last weekend following his decision
to switch
from single
seater racing for '09. Testing a SEAT
Cupra Championship Leon with the Welch Motorsport
team at his home
circuit of Silverstone, Moyers didn’t
take long to settle into racing with a roof. Despite
torrential rain making the Northants circuit a hazardous place
to learn a whole new style of
driving
Michael
quickly came to
terms with the differences. Over 3 test sessions Moyers felt he’d
dragged
himself close enough to the pace he was aiming at, for the day
to be considered a resounding success.
Despite several sections
of the track lying under significant levels of standing water for much
of
the day,
Moyers beamed: “I
was pleasantly surprised by the SEAT Leon Cupra. It is very well balanced
and
handles
similarly to a single seater in many ways. It was a very challenging
experience with the terrible
conditions on track, but by the 2nd session
I felt at home in the car and it filled me with a lot of
confidence knowing
that I could control it so well in the wet. I set a best time of 1 minute
12.5 seconds
and looking at the data it all looked very promising; with
2 more tests, I should be right on the pace. I
want to give a big thank
you to Welch Motorsport for the opportunity they have given me today.
They are
a very professional outfit and I can't wait for my next test
with them."
Welch Motorsport team
boss John Welch was also pleased with Moyers’ progress
on the day, adding:
“The SEAT Cupra with the aero package is quite
an impressive bit of kit and Michael took to it like a duck
to water,
especially considering the prevailing conditions. As the circuit progressively
dried he coped
with
the changing track and set-up very well. At the end
of the day he had a broad grin on his face; it was
a
very good test.”
